Knights of Columbus
Basketball Free Throw Championship
Names Local Champions for 2023 &
has a State Champion in its group
The local level of the 2023 Knights of Columbus International Free Throw
Championship was held on Sunday January 22nd
at Our Lady of Mercy Parish Center. The Knights of Columbus
sponsors the contest each year to promote family activities in its
council’s communities and Plainville Council 3544 was glad to host it
again this year since the covid pandemic had waned in the previous many
months. All boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 14 were
invited to try their best for 15 free throws and compete for some prizes
and the chance to advance to the higher-level contests. Not all of the
age group categories were contested but a good sized group of families
came out and eight local champions were named.
The 8 winners had great performances, became district champions and were
eligible for the State level contest. Sean Harris and Charlotte Cole
were the 9 year old champs for the boys and girls; Mason Colon was the
champ among 10 year old boys and Katja Sepko was the 10 yr old girls
champ. Yahya Adnane was the 11 year old boys champion and Jaylise Ruff
earned the Girls 11-year-old title ; Courtney Thorpe was the girls 12 yr
old champ and Kyle Harris was the best of the 13-year-old boys.
Other local level contestants were 9 yr old boys William Petite
and Darren Sepko, and 9 year old girl Anna Petillo; 10 year
old boys, Goivanni Evangelista, Nathan Marshall, and
Benjamin Mead, and 10 year old girl Ashley Thorpe,
11 year old boys
Ryan Petillo, Jack Valentine and Zachary Wasley;
and 12 year old girl Asia Benoit.
Many thanks to community sponsor J.R. Heating and Cooling who
contributed towards prizes for winners in each age group category.
The winners from the January local level contest competed at
the State level contest held on February 18th at St. Paul’s High
School in Bristol, Ct. The Plainville local sharpshooters
competed against winners from all districts around the entire
state. Charlotte Cole and Courtney Thorpe were unable to attend
the State contest. Congratulations to Kyle Harris on his great
State level performance. Kyle’s score of 19 out of 25 was high
enough to beat all the other contestants to become the
State winner in the 13 year old boys group.
