Jane Mercure’s Life Story
Jane Anne Fayle Mercure, 91, of Plainville, returned home to the “good
Lord” and the loving arms of the Blessed Mother bravely and beautifully
on November 18th, 2022, surrounded by the love and profound gratitude of
her family and in the comfort of her treasured home.
Her greatest joy in life was her cherished family, including ten
grandchildren of whom she was immensely proud, and we will all dearly
miss basking in her devoted and unending love; Sharon Elizabeth and
Glenn Washburn of Saint Augustine, FL, and children, Benjamin and Joshua
and his wife, Kelly Bachman; Maureen Anne, her adored and precious
princess to whom she doted on for 61 special years; Colleen Marie and
Mark Brochu, of Plainville, CT, and their children, Erin and Taegan;
Gail Theresa Mercure of Burlington and her children, Grace, Sam,
Harrison, and Mason; Ed’s children, Matthew Mercure (Lauren O’Connor),
and Kevin and his wife, Brooklyn Mercure, and their mother, Jeanette
Francini Howes. She also sadly leaves behind her sisters-in-law, Jackie
Fayle, Joyce Griffin and Carol Fields; there was a deepest love and
connection with her many cousins, nieces and nephews, and the next
generation of “greats;” and her ENTIRE Wishart crew! Her biggest delight
was to be honored by her namesake—Jane Cassidy Johnson—daughter of her
great-niece Annie.
Born to Anthony and Ethyl (Wishart) Fayle in The Bronx, New York, Jane
delighted in sharing her April 11th birthday with her father (and
nephew, Bill Fayle). She rejoices in seeing again those who predeceased
her; brothers Orin Fayle and Alton and his wife, Dottie Fayle; her
sister, Ada and her husband Bill Totten; and an infant sister, Helen
Fayle; and brothers-in-law Donald Griffin and Edward Mercure.
She spent freshman year at Plainville High School and graduated from the
Holy Family Academy, Baltic, CT, Class of ’50. After a few years working
at a bank on Wall Street, she then worked at Pratt & Whitney in
Southington where she met her future husband, Bob. Six months after a
date where nerves prevented her from eating her filet mignon, they were
engaged and six months later were married with guests braving an early
snowstorm to celebrate the happy couple. Finding their little corner of
the world on the outskirts of Paderewski Park, they found HOME and love
there for 65 years; sharing a driveway and many cups of sugar (to this
day!) with the Herman and Yvonne Masse family which is now “Jimmy Jimmy”
and Joyce Masse who she loved like her own—she even drove Mrs. Masse to
the hospital when she gave birth to Jim!
With Maureen’s arrival, PARC became a lifeline and integral part of
Jane’s life and she and Bob worked tirelessly on behalf of the
organization. She nurtured countless deep connections from the Coughlin
family to the Kraut Family to Fran Rose to her loyal and cherished
friend and visitor right to the end, Frank Robinson, and so many others.
In 2009, Jane and her husband were honored with the Celebrate
Plainville! Award for outstanding community service based on their years
of selfless contribution and dedication to their good causes and beloved
town. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Mercy church and an active
participant and spent much time supporting the Junior High School in its
day
Jane’s true chosen profession was that of “Mom” which she fully devoted
herself to until also working as a secretary for CREC in the Plainville
School system where she impacted the lives of many children with special
needs for 42 years and was honored as their longest standing employee.
It is an understatement to say that she deeply loved the people she
gathered through her workplace, too many to count but all so valuable
including Charlotte Emery; her monthly brunch buddies Cathy, Betsy, and
Pat; and Carol, Nicole, Dawn, Terry, Georgette, John Z, Greg Z, Ed D,
Dean E and the list goes on.
Her greatest honor and most important role was that of “World’s Greatest
Grandmother” and her door was always open—literally! with three grands
taking up separate residencies with her over the last decade. That and
having the Brochu Bunch right across the street for a quarter century of
fun and backyard glider talks reveals how much people enjoyed being in
and staying in her world of warmth.
A quick rundown of her favorites include more recently Vlasic zesty dill
pickles, Russell Stover Mint Patties, Chip and Johanna Gaines (also
loving the new cooking show and will really miss not seeing more about
The Castle!), her beloved Property Brothers and Maine Cabin Masters!
With all she learned she became an expert and could have turned to
renovating and rebuilding! Prior years were joyfully filled with UConn
Women’s Basketball, movies with Lorraine, card nights with Gertha and
Mimi, sewing nights out with neighborhood moms, her crocheting and
Cathedral quilts, many trips to Catnip Mouse in Riverton, and always and
forever steak and potatoes in all forms, enjoying the continual
entertainment of the Choral Society shows and the many youth theater
shows, and summers spent “down home” in Tabusintac, N.B., Canada. She
was grateful for the unending laughs during annual weekend getaways with
the girls – Joyce, Carol, and Rita. She loved her weekly/daily visits to
see her favorite grocer, Kenny Gnazzo, and the friendship and support
received from him and his staff over the years as well as time spent
with her adored her hairdressers, sisters Becky and Cheryl, over the
decades. She treasured her Eucharist visits from Brenda, Pauline, and
Leona. In her yearbook, she was quoted as always seen “talking” and the
topic of conversation was “my nieces and nephews” and that was prophetic
and continued forever.
She would want to note her appreciation and love for Maureen’s Marilyns
(Stitham and Badner), to Kathleen for always making her life beautiful
through flowers, gifts and goodies and her “Pidge” MaryBeth with husband
Apps for their friendship and visits. She and her family extend
sincerest appreciation to the Hartford HealthCare at Home team including
Melanie, Susan, and Irene for their support, guidance, and loving care
over these past weeks.
